Halifax's matcha scene is having a moment. A few years ago you'd struggle to find anything greener than a mint tea downtown; now matcha lattes are on menus from the North End to Dartmouth. Here's how to find a genuinely good cup in the HRM, and what separates proper matcha from green-tinted milk.

What makes a matcha place actually good

• They name their grade: a place proud of its matcha will tell you it's ceremonial
• It's whisked, not just stirred: powder dumped into steamed milk clumps and tastes chalky
• The colour is vivid green, not olive or grey
• It's sweetened to taste, not pre-sweetened into a syrup bomb
• They can tell you where it's from: Uji, Nishio, Kagoshima, or another named Japanese region

The Halifax matcha scene

You'll find matcha lattes at independent cafés across the peninsula, in Dartmouth, and increasingly in Bedford and Sackville, and quality varies exactly as much as you'd expect. Some spots whisk to order with real ceremonial powder; others pump a sweetened matcha syrup. Use the checklist above, and when in doubt, order it iced with light sweetness; bad matcha can't hide there.
